CSA Box Pairings: April 30, 2015

May is practically here, and the weather is showing off appropriately this weekend. Happy glory days of T-shirts and shorts! We're moving into some super flavorful, umami-packed and playful recipes this week to honor the weather. The first takes advantage of our lettuce bounty, and you can swap the straight garlic out for your green garlic to put a fresh twist on the whole thing. The second recipe is off-the-hook decadent but still manages to feel bright and lifted thanks to its incorporation of our fresh strawberries. 

Recipe: Caesar Salad with Classic Dressing from Bon Appétit

Pair with: Setzer Grüner Veltliner Austria 2012 ($17)
Admittedly, pairing with a Caesar salad is tricky. You've got assertive flavors with the anchovies and raw garlic, plus a ton of umami from the Parmesan--and yet, you don't want to overwhelm the greens with something too hefty. It's not even an Italian dish, so the notion of "what grows together goes together" isn't really applicable. We settled on a sprightly Grüner Veltliner from Austria to go with this recipe, because the grape's spicy green notes always seem to stand up well to salads, while the feisty acidity slices through the rich cheese, egg yolk and oil.

Pair with: Donkey and Goat Isabel's Grenache Rosé Mendocino 2014 ($27)

Pink pairs with pink--sounds like a good guideline to us! This rosé from husband-and-wife team Jared and Tracey Brandt was made in collaboration with and in honor of their daughter, Isabel. It's pretty full, fruity and just a touch creamy on the back-end. Appropriately, the sandwich is likewise full, fruity, and creamy for sure. There's something that screams hedonism and embracing the moment about both drinking a rosé and eating an oozy grilled cheese. Here's to that.
