CSA Box Pairings: March 19, 2015

This sunny week, our boxes blessed us with more fantastic asparagus and springy green garlic--not to be confused with green onions, although they do look similar. Green garlic flavors are delicate and more subdued than their fully bulbous white brethren. 

Herb and Spice Lamb Chops with Minted Asparagus from Food & Wine 

Pair with: Milziade Antano Montefalco Rosso Umbria 2012 ($23)

Merlot, Sangiovese and Sagrantino purrrr. We are loving this blend from Umbria, Italy. The quaint town of Montefalco is often referred to as the "Balcony of Umbria" as it sits at 1,550 feet above sea level. The commune might be small, but its wines are bursting with BIG flavor: bold and earthy with a hefty dose of black plum, cassis and balsamic. The dominant Sangiovese gives it brightness, and thanks to the dose of Merlot, the wine coasts on smooth tannins with hints of black pepper and cinnamon. How do they say it in Italian? Delizioso!


Roasted Baby Potatoes with Green Garlic Sauce from Food & Wine

Pair with: Viñedo de los Vientos Estival Uruguay 2012 ($15)

Pay attention to Uruguay! The South American country is coming on hot in terms of better and better quality wines. This blend of Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay and Moscato Bianco hails from the country's coastal region of Atlantida, Canelones. The chalky soil and cool, breezy micro-climate (Viñedo de los Vientos literally translates to "Vineyard of the Winds") is perfect for growing aromatic white grape varieties with an exotic Alsatian flair. Here, the spice and floral potency of the selected grapes are bolstered by clean fruit flavors and lively, refreshing acidity that makes it feel perfect for spring--just like these garlicky potatoes.
