CSA Box Pairings: February 11, 2016

We're almost there! A few more warm days to outnumber the cold and we'll be frolicking like forest nymphs. In the meantime, here are some fun Spring-y recipes to try out.

Recipe: Halibut with Grapefruit Beurre Blanc from Epicurious

Pair with: Von Winning Sauvignon Blanc Trocken II Pfalz 2014 ($26)

Grapefruit, our beloved breakfast citrus is no one-hit-wonder. Despite how intuitive it is to have oranges and lemons with your seafood, grapefruit often hangs out as a benchwarmer when you're making dinner. With this recipe, you'll want nothing but grapefruit for its sweet, tangy, and slightly bitter flavors to light a few sparks in your creamy beurre blanc sauce and fresh halibut. Such an incredibly simple and elegant recipe calls for something really, really good.

Crack open a bottle of Von Winning's Sauvignon Blanc and you're golden. This wine comes from Pfalz, a German growing region that's tempered by the rain shadow effect of the Haardt mountains. There, the grapes are just warm enough to ripen while retaining those explosive tart green flavors and refreshing mouth-puckering acidity. Anyone who can't wait for the next time they can roll around in a big grassy field will understand why this wine is sooo gooooood. In the meantime, this recipe and this wine will be your saving grace.

Recipe: Green Garlic Panisse from David Kinch

Pair with: Sarl Gauthier Pierre Jour De Soif Bourgueil 2014 ($15)

This one goes out to all you green garlic lovers! This Green Garlic Panisse is crispy, savory, and a little reward after a long week of hard work. To compliment the ever-so-tasty-savory freshness of the green garlic, pour yourself a glass of Gauthier's cabernet franc from Bourgueil (pronounced "bur-goy"). This particular bottle hints at spring flowers, a touch of gaminess and just a smidgen of green pepper spice. Gauthier makes a bangin wine with destemmed grapes and only ferments free-run juice. Coupled with the crunchy, hot green garlic panisse, the wine will add some serious pizazz to your life. Serve to your BFFs, lovers, acquaintances and all will be happy.
